Qurbani (also "Udhiya," "Korban," or "Kurban") is the religious sacrifice performed during Eid al-Adha, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah. For 2026, here is what you need to know.
Eid al-Adha 2026 dates
Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected to fall on late May 2026 (precise date depends on lunar moon-sighting in your region). Qurbani may be performed on the day of Eid (10th of Dhul-Hijjah) and the three following days (11th, 12th, 13th of Dhul-Hijjah). Sacrificing before Eid prayer is invalid.
Who is required to perform Qurbani?
Classical Islamic jurisprudence considers Qurbani either obligatory (wajib) or a highly emphasized sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah) for every adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the Zakat nisab on Eid day. In either case, it carries strong communal expectation as a confirmed act of worship.
What animals qualify?
| Animal | Minimum Age | Shares |
|---|---|---|
| Sheep / lamb / goat | 1 year (or 6 months for fattened lamb) | 1 person per animal |
| Cattle / cow | 2 years | Up to 7 persons per animal |
| Camel | 5 years | Up to 7 persons per animal |
The animal must be free of major defects (blindness, severe lameness, missing limbs). Minor defects (small scars, missing teeth) are permissible.

How proxy (vekalet) sacrifice works
Under Islamic law, you can appoint Bakara 195 as your wakeel (proxy/agent) to perform Qurbani on your behalf. This is permissible across classical Islamic jurisprudence provided:
- You explicitly authorize the proxy (we provide a vekalet acceptance step in the donation flow)
- The animal is identified to your sacrifice (we maintain donor-to-animal records)
- The sacrifice is performed in the legal Eid window
- The meat is distributed per Sunnah (1/3 to family, 1/3 to friends/neighbors, 1/3 to the poor — though proxies typically distribute 100% to the poor on the donor's behalf)
Bakara 195 partners with Türkiye-wide and international slaughterhouses with veterinary oversight to ensure halal slaughter standards (Zabiha) and proper distribution.
Fiqh notes
- Aqiqah (newborn sacrifice): different from Qurbani; can be performed anytime after a child's birth.
- One sheep/share per person: scholars differ on whether one sheep can be sacrificed for an entire household. Conservative position is one share per adult Muslim.
- Naming the sacrificer: the wakeel pronounces the donor's name (or "the donor on whose behalf this sacrifice is offered") at the time of slaughter.
