Who pays fitrana?

Every Muslim who has excess wealth beyond their basic needs during Ramadan. Classical Islamic jurisprudence considers it religiously obligatory (wajib/fard).

Who should I pay for?

Yourself, your spouse, and any unburdened dependents you support (children). Classical Islamic jurisprudence offers two valid approaches — either the head of household pays for the spouse, or the spouse pays her own; either is acceptable.

When is fitrana due?

It becomes obligatory at fajr (dawn) on Eid al-Fitr morning. Best time to pay is during the last week of Ramadan, before Eid prayer.

Who receives fitrana?

The 8 categories listed in Quran 9:60 (the poor, needy, debtors, travelers in need, etc.). Cannot be given to parents, children, or spouse.

What about fidya?

Fidya (compensation for missed fasts due to permanent inability) is the same rate as fitrana in 2026: £5 per missed day.
